Step-by-step instructions
We’ve all been there. One great meal, and your favorite pan is coated in stuck-on food.
Before you reach for the abrasive scrubber, here’s how to clean a burnt pan the easy way:
Reheat the pan (don’t let it cool): Keep the pan warm, or if it’s already cooled, set it back on the stove over low-medium heat for a minute or two.
Add water: Pour in an inch or two of water, enough to cover the bottom and any stuck-on bits. For tougher burnt-on food, add a splash of white vinegar or a teaspoon of baking soda.
Bring to a gentle simmer: Let the water heat up to a soft simmer.
Scrape as it simmers: Using a wooden spoon or silicone spatula (or a flat metal one for metal pans), gently scrape the bottom. You’ll feel the burnt bits release as the steam and hot water work.
Keep simmering and scraping: Continue for 5 to 10 minutes, until most of the stubborn residue has lifted.
Pour out and wash: Carefully tip out the hot, dirty water. Your pan will now wipe clean with a regular sponge and dish soap.
